Bishop Genealogy

I've worked for years on researching my husband's family, the Bishop's. For a long time, two of my sister-in-law's who lived nearby used to go with me up to the Fort Wayne Indiana library, supposedly one of the best genealogical libraries around. Then one of them moved away, the other one had to work far too much to continue an interest in it, we moved and went through life change after life change, and I just quit going. Of course, by then, the internet had really grown by leaps and bounds, and much of the material we could only get at the library was being put online. The internet has helped me greatly further my research, and meet new contacts that are normally distantly related to my husband in one way or another.
We've traveled to Floyd Virginia, and Pikeville Kentucky, and many other areas many times, and would really love to settle in one of those places, if there were only work.
For now though, the internet will have to do.
What my research is all about:
The family of Hans Johannes Bischoff, aka John Bishop:
 Descendants of Hans Johannes Bischoff

Generation No. 1

1. HANS JOHANNES4 BISCHOFF (HANS JAKOB3, GEORGE HINNRICH2, HANS JAKOBS1) was born April 07, 1731 in Oberhausen, Rheineland/Pfalz, and died Abt. 1820 in Montgomery/Floyd County Virginia. He married (1) MARGARETHA OVERMEYER Abt. 1750 in Possibly In PA, MD, VA, Or Germany. She was born Abt. 1735, and died Abt. 1772 in Montgomery County Virginia. He married (2) RUTH ELKINS Bet. 1772 - 1776 in Probobly Montgomery County, Virginia, daughter of RALPH ELKINS and FRANCES BROWN. She was born Abt. 1728.

Notes for HANS JOHANNES BISCHOFF:
Notes from Williamson's file:
John Bishop served in the French & Indian War.

He is listed in Captain George Mercer's Company, among "The Party of Recruits Which Joined at Will's Creek after the Battle of the Meadows (3rd Day of July, 1754)." In returns made by the same Company on July 9th, 1754, John is listed as "missing." It was later recorded that he was among those paid 1 pound, 15 shillings, 10 pence for "sundrys due on account of claims to land." Wills Creek is a tributary of the North Branch Potomac River in Pennsylvania and Maryland. It drops off the Allegheny Plateau of southeastern Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and enters the North Branch Potomac River at Cumberland, Maryland. Somerset was created in 1795 from a part of Bedford County. Bedford was created in 1771 from Cumberland County.

Due to his military service, John acquired land in what later became Floyd County, Virginia. On January 1st, 1767, there was a transaction between Samuel Canterbury and John Bishop, involving land on Mill Creek on the Little River, a branch of the New River.

John is listed on Virginia Muster Rolls of November 6th, 1771 and 1772.

John was summoned to court at least twice in 1775 in Fincastle County, to answer petitions of an Alexander Baine.

John & Henry Bishop both enlisted for service in the Revolutionary War on September 13th, 1777. Henry stated in his 1832 Floyd County, Virginia Revolutionary War Pension application that he had volunteered in Botetourt County.

John settled in the Indian Valley area of what would become Floyd County, Virginia. According to family lore, two Bishop brothers came to Floyd County, VA -
one stayed, and the other left for eastern Kentucky.

Other possible children are William, b. abt. 1763, and Thomas. The Elizabeth Bishop listed in Montgomery County in 1810 may have been William's widow.

****When and where did John die?****
John's place & date of death are sometimes given as Lincoln County, Tennessee, May 15th, 1775 or 1776. However, John never lived in Tennessee, and he was definitely still alive well after 1776! He is also sometimes listed as buried in Westminster or Taneytown, Maryland. It appears some of this incorrect information may have arisen from confusion with another John Bishop, who died in Westminster, Maryland leaving a will dated May 15th, 1776. According to family tradition, our John died and was buried in Montgomery (now Floyd) County, Virginia. Based on records of that county, he appears to have died sometime between 1806 - 1810.

From queries at the German Migration Resource Center: Dated 1-28-2000 Post done by Walter A. Dreier (email shown as walter@ktc.com- but no good as of 2001-) Query: Bischoff, Johannes, b. 1728, Ansbach, Mittelfranken, Bayern. Married Margaretha Overmeyer, 1758 and evidently came to the U.S. Colonies shortly thereafter . I need some record of his immigration, especially the port and date of arrival. After arrival in either Penns or Maryland he may have been in the French and Indian Wars, but eventually settled in Floyd (later Montgomery Co.) Va. and raised a large family, including sons Henry, George, Jacob and John. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

I have yet to be able to locate this site on the net- Here is the know n URL for it: http://www.germanmigration.com/queries/queryresults.asp I was sent this as a print out page from John Bishop Maxwell in March of 2000.

On 5-10-1770- William Ingles - list of titheables Boutetourt County, Virginia- (his list to be taken on the New River and waters thereof on both sides, as high as Sayers)- Note- on the same list were the following: Charles Skaggs, James Skaggs, Long James Skaggs, John Plick, Henry Skaggs, and others. John Bishop had "1 poll." One should note here, that this part of Botetourt County later became Montgomery County- in 1776. Another note here- the name of John Bishop, is also on a list of "delinquents"- on the West waters from John Craig's to Peak Creek, as also is Charles Skaggs. The originals of these lists were originally at the courthouse for Fincastle County, then transferred to the Virginia State Library. Copies of all of these land transactions are also listed in Chaukley's Chronicles. Another note of interest- Though John Bishop is NOT on the 1771 Ingles tax list- Ralph Elkins, Jessey Elkins, Richard Elkins, and Abner Lester ARE on it. I did find listed in Mary Kegley's book "Adventures on Western Waters"- John Bishop listed with one poll- but this particular list had no location given, nor the name of whose list it was. On that same list- without a location given, are the following people: William Ratliff, Daniel Harman, George Quisenberry, John Plick, John Elswick, Jonathan Elswick, Long James Skaggs. John Bishop was taxed in Botestourt County Va as early as 1771. We show him in land transactions as early as 1767- Commisioners Certificate issued September 1782 to Samuel Canterberry showing him to have been "an assignee of John Bishop". This was for 190 acres on Mill Creek surveyed by the Loyal Company in 1753, or 1754, on which "Bishop settled agreeable to terms of sale publicly offered by said company or agent in 1767. Interest from Jan 1, 1767."- This does place John Bishop in Botetourt, later Montgomery County, Va in 1767, not in Pennsylvania, as some researchers have claimed by giving the birth of his daughter Lydia as being York County, Pa in 1767.

Another note here: There is a DAR file- (Daughters of the Revolutionary War) of Ann (Bishop) Higginbothom (#273844) a descendant of Henry and Fanny (Simpkins) Bishop- which references a family Bible of Jacob Bishop- son of Henry. This Bible, in 1933, was in the possession of Ann Higginbothom's mother, Mrs. H.R. Bishop.

Names of some of the leading families of Floyd/Montgomery County Virginia: Harmons, Bishop's, Slushers, Cox's, Reed's, Goodykoontz's, Lester's, Duncan's, Boothe's, Skaggs .......

A Mr. Al Hurt, who owned the farm that Dr. Aras Bishop Cox bought in 1852 in Ashe County, North Carolina, wrote to Mr. Doug Bishop, (owner of that farm as of 8-31-1986- and letter written then also)- that his mother's oldest sister, b. 1869, wrote the following: "Some family history gives the Bishop name who came direct from Germany as John- not Henry. John married in Germany and had some family before coming to America. He was tall and athletic. He and his wife came direct from Germany, and settled on Little River in Floyd Co Va which was Montgomery County then( After first coming from PA as one writer says>) Henry Bishop, (the son of John) was born in Germany. Dr. A.B. Cox recalled hearing him pray in German. Mr. Hurt also states that his records show that Henry Bishop's father was John (not Henry) Bishop, that he mrrd. 1'st Mary?? before coming to America. His 2'nd wife was Ruth Elkins. Maude Sparks Fannin, of Portsmouth, Ohio, a descendant of David and Elizabeth's through their daughter Catherine, who mrrd. Harvey Lester, wrote in 1976 that she remembered her mother told her that her great grandparents, Harvey and Catherine, sometimes spoke in a foreign language, but she could not remember what the language was, and now, there was no one to ask.

In 1996, on our trip to Floyd County, Virginia- we talked with Mr. Cavel Bishop and his wife Daisy. They confirmed to us that the land behind their home, and surrounding it, was indeed part of the original John Bishop land. We also met Mrs. Neva Wurzburger, who owned the farm on which the original John Bishop home used to stand. She showed us where the house formerly stood, walked us about her land and pointed out to us where the graves were located, though the markers were long since gone. Later, she mailed me a picture, with an arrow drawn to show us exactly where the graves were- after questioning other relatives, and recieving more definite verification for us. In the book, "Ambrose N. Cox, Sr., Descendants 1772-1972" written by Elza B. Cox- he states that John Bishop, his wife, and other family members are buried on the "old John Bishop" place, this being the farm previously referred to here owned by the Wurzburger family.

Notes for RUTH ELKINS:

The following are notes from Vanessa Allen on Ruth Elkins:

Ruth Elkins (4.Ralph3, 2.Richard2, 1.Ralph1) born Abt. 1728, King George Co, Virginia, married (1) John Skaggs, born Abt. 1726, married (2) John Sr. Bishop, born Abt. 1731, Germany, died Aft. 1806, Montgomery (now Floyd) Co, Virginia. Ruth died Aft. 1806, Montgomery (now Floyd) Co, Virginia. Ruth Elkins was married first to John Skaggs, and second to John Bishop. A story is told that Ruth was captured by Indians in the 1760's and taken to the Carolinas. She was pregnant when she escaped and made it back, then she had a daughter she named Rachel Skaggs. No one knows what happened with her marriage to John Skaggs. Ruth then met and married John Bishop, who raised her daughter Rachel. I haven't seen the documentation for this story, so don't know the source of the information. This Skaggs family was in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in the 1760's, then in Montgomery County, Virginia in the 1770's, the same as Ruth's brothers Ralph Jr. and Richard. On daughter Rachel Skaggs' marriage license to William Lester, it states she is the daughter of Ruth Bishop, wife of John Bishop. John Bishop and his wife, Ruth, lived on Little River, off New River, in what is now Floyd County, south of Radford, Virginia, but was then Montgomery County, VA. John Bishop's daughter Margaret married Archibald Elkins. Margaret and Archibald lived nearby on Little River. John's son Jacob Bishop married Katherine Elkins and they also lived nearby. John Skaggs: 1767 John Skaggs was listed on PITTSYLVANIA County Virginia tithables. 1777 John Skaggs was listed on MONTGOMERY County Virginia tithables. 1786 John Skaggs excused from tax levy book, RUSSELL County, Virginia. 1793 April - John Skaggs pensioner 8 lbs., wounded at King's Mountain and incapable of laboring for sustenance. Pension ordered paid for 1786 - 1792, and 1793 Russell County, Virginia. Some Skaggs land on or near LITTLE RIVER, Montgomery Co, Virginia, Early Adventures on The Western Waters, Volume 2, by Mary Kegley. 1780 Sept 13, Montgomery County, Virginia. RACHEL SKAGGS... 400 acres on LITTLE RIVER, opposite Henry Skaggs... 1780 Sept 23, Montgomery County, Virginia. John Charlton, assignee of ZACHARIA SKEGGS, heir to JOHN SKEGGS... 150 acres on the branch of Meadow creek (NEW RIVER). John Plickinstopher assignee of JOHN SKEGGS, 100 acres below the mouth of LITTLE RIVER, not to extend over the river. A James Skaggs had land on Little River at an earlier date. Not sure how all of the Skaggs families are related. John Bishop: Also known as Hans Johannes Bischoff. John Bishop settled in southwest Virginia on 190 acres on Mill Creek, Little River, off New River, in 1767. From Footprints On The Sands Of Time, by Dr. Aras Cox, Henry's grandson who was born in 1816: "...The original ancestors of the Bishop family came form Holland. They were the first settlers of Floyd (then Montgomery county). The old lady [John's first wife] drowned attempting to cross Little River when it was too flush. Their sons, Henry and Jacob, were large athletic men noted for industry and prudence in managing the business affairs of life." 1771, John Bishop on tithable list of Botetourt Co, Virginia. During the Revolutionary War, took the Oath of Allegiance in Montgomery County between September 1777 and April 1778. 1782 Montgomery Co, VA John Bishop on land tax and personal property tax lists. No other Bishop is listed. 1787 land tax list, John Bishop, 100 acres and son Henry Bishop, 15 acres. 1787 personal property tax list, John Bishop 1 tithable plus one male over 16 and under 21. 1788 Montgomery Co, VA Order Book 1, page 308; excused John Bishop from paying the county levy and pole tax on account of his old age and infirmities. 1796 Montgomery Co, VA; John and Ruth Bishop granted land to Henry Bishop, Bk B Page 256. 1806 July 30; Montgomery Co, VA Deed Book D, page 391. Indenture between John Bishop and Ruth his wife to John Altizer for $200. 50 acres situated on Little River, a branch of New River and joining the lands of John Lester and Jacob Bishop being part of two grants made to Henry Bishop. Witnessed by William Grimes, Robert Grimes and Thomas Alley Jr. Note: Thomas Alley witnessed the marriage of Barnett Farmer and Elizabeth Elkins in 1785. John Altizer married Archibald Elkins' daughter Elizabeth, and William Grimes married Archibald's daughter Mary "Polly". John Bishop had first been married first to Margaretha Overmeyer, and they had the following children (possibly more): 1) Margaret Bishop, who married Archibald Elkins ; 2) George, who married Nancy Anna "Annie" Boothe, d/o Stephen Boothe and sister of Jerusha who married Elijah Elkins ; 3) Henry, who married Fannie Simpkins ; 4) Lydia, who married Henry Long ; and 5) Jacob, who married Katherine/Catherine Elkins.

Margaretha drowned while trying to cross Little River. John then married Ruth Elkins Skaggs and raised Ruth's daughter Rachel, who married William Calvin Lester. John Bishop and Ruth Elkins had another son: 1) David "Long Dave" Bishop, who married Elizabeth Wolford.

Nancy's notes, in part: In reference to some of Vanessa's notes above, she mentions that it is possible that John and Margaretha had more children. Yes, this is a very definite possiblity, which is discussed much more fully under the chapter on John Bishop. However, there is also one other note on Ruth I need to mention here- there is also a child named Darky Gothrin, that somehow was associated with Ruth. At this point in time, we have yet to determine exactly what the relationship was, whose child Darky was, whether it was Ruth's and someone by the surname of Gothrin, or if Darky was a Skaggs who married a Gothrin then married again, etc. Her descendants are included in this book. Please refer directly to her chapter for further details about Darky.

2. HENRY5 BISHOP (HANS JOHANNES4 BISCHOFF, HANS JAKOB3, GEORGE HINNRICH2, HANS JAKOBS1) was born April 1757, and died June 02, 1839 in Floyd County Virginia. He married FRANCIS "FANNY" SIMPKINS May 23, 1785 in Montgomery County Virginia, daughter of DANIEL SIMPKINS. She was born Abt. 1758, and died May 29, 1850.

Notes for HENRY BISHOP:

The following is quoted directly from Joyce Akers Buckert, who wrote an extensive history of her lineage back to Henry Bishop. Her work was excellent, and has been used often as a reference in this gernealogy.

On October 15, 1832 in Floyd County, Virginia, Henry Bishop Sr. aged 75, declared he served his first tour under Captain Burk and Col. Preston. He volunteered in the Botetout County (at present Floyd and for a time Montgomery County) and served one month against the Indians.
He next served under Capt. Joseph Cloyd for one month and again fought against the Indians. Henry Patton was Clloyd's lieutenant and Col. Preston commanded the whole force. He next served under Capt. George Pearis. He then served under Capt. John Taylor, all monthly tours.
He enlisted under Capt. John Mastin and Gen. Shelby in 1779 against the Indians and served three months. During this tour they destroyed the Indian village of Chicamogany (Chicamauga) and drove off all their cattle and returned in the summer of 1779. When he returned he was sent to the Lead Mines to guard there, where he was found by Capt. Pearis who was going against the Tories. Pearis took him along until he became sick and unable to proceed further. Abraham Trigg was colonel at this time.
He afterward served another tour under Capt. Israel Lorton on Walker's Creek and was again called out by Col. Preston to scout and guard the forts.
On July 17, 1833 Henry Bishop declared he was very deaf. He served one month under Capt. Burk and Col. Preston, being drafted, at Wood's Fort on Rich Creek. His next tour was under Capt. Cloyd and Lieut. Patton and Col. Preston for one month. On these tours, he was marched down New River scouting through the wilderness.
He served one month under Capt. George Pearis and Col. Preston, being drafted, and again marched down New River at Forter's Ford and through the mountains. His next tour was under Capt. Taylor for one month. Preston was still acting colonel in the country. He was drafted and marched through the came country against the Indians. He volunteered under Capt. Mastin in 1779 and served three months and fought against the Indians at Chicamagany. He served his next tour under Capt. George Pearis for one month as a volunteer. They marched down New River against the Indians, he believes in 1780.
He then served three weeks under Lieut. Patterson in 1780. The Indians fired upon them at Island Creek fork. He then served one week guarding prisoners at New River under Capt. Lorton, who were taken on suspicion of Toryism. Preston was still Colonel. They marched to the Lead Mines. He went under Capt. Pearis and Trigg. They were gone three weeks in 1780 when he was taken sick and left by his company. He was a private on all these tours.
He afterward served two months against the Indians under Capt. Lorton and Col. Preston in the spring of 1781.
His house burned during this time.
On July 1, 1835, in Montgomery county, Virginia, Nathan Ratliff declared he knew Henry Bishop Sr. of Floyd County and served with him in 1780.He went as far as the lead mines with him. They were mess mates.
Pension was paid until June 2, 1839, the day of his death. On Jan 18, 1841, Fanny Bishop, age 76, declared she was a widow of Henry Bishop. She was married May 1785 and he died June 2, 1839. Francis Charlton declared he will be 82 in February next. When quite a boy he became aquainted with Henry Bishop who married Fanny Simpkins and had several children.
On September 21, 1849, Fanny Bishop, age 86, applied for continuance of pension. On March 20, 1856, John Bishop, one of the heirs of Henry Bishop, deceased, gave power of attorney to James C. Taylor to ascertain whether any pension was due.
Henry Bishop of Floyd County, Virgnia, private in the regiment of Col. Preston n the Virginia line for 8 months and 28 days, was placed on the Virginia pension roll at $29.78 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 23114 was issued November 9, 1833.
Fanny Bishop, the widow of Henry Bishop, was placed on the Virginia pension roll at $29.78 per annum. The last payment was March 4, 1850.

The following information is quoted from Carol Sutherland, a direct descendant of Henry. She has worked extremely hard to document her line of ancestry, and she's done a fantastic job.

Henry Bishop born April, 1757 in Maryland (this is confirmed by Henry’s son on the 1880 census). Henry Bishop is listed along with his father John Bishop on the 1777 Daniel Trigg’s Company of Montgomery County, Va. and Henry Bishop is listed as a soldier at the Battle of Shallow Ford in 1780.

Henry Bishop had several Treasury Warrants dating from May 10, 1782 through June 1783 for various parcels of land. (source: Library of Virginia –

Children of HENRY BISHOP and FRANCIS SIMPKINS are:
i. MARY6 BISHOP, b. Abt. 1785, Montgomery County Virginia; d. 1817, Ashe County, North Carolina; m. MATTHEW COX III; b. May 04, 1786, Montgomery County, Virginia; d. 1860.

Notes for MATTHEW COX III:

Some researchers say he is the son of Carter Cox and Nancy Reed instead. At this point in time, I've pretty basically come to the conclusion that he was the son of Matthew and Lucy. There was however, another Matthew Cox that was married to Lucy Gilham, that I believe was the son of Carter and Nancy. Also- some folks say that Nancy Reed wasn't Nancy Reed, but a Nancy Wade instead. I've not found proof of this yet.

ii. PHEMIA BISHOP, b. Abt. 1786; m. JAMES BREEDING.

Notes for JAMES BREEDING:

The 72nd Virginia Militia out of Russell County, Virginia- Notes taken from the "New River Notes" Website. This may or may not be the same James Breeding, but I suspect it is.

The 72nd Militia from Russell County was mustered in Confederate Service at Lebanon, Russell County, VA on March 20, 1862. The militia was in service approximately 10 or 20 days. A total of 695 men served in this unit, many enlisted in various units from Southwestern Virginia. (This very well likely included Montgomery County, where we find James with a land deed in 1789).

In 1795 Henry and Rebecca must have returned to Shenandoah Co, VA , because he was the executor of his mother's will (which named his sister, Nancy Combs). By 1796 they had removed to Jefferson Co., Ky . See also James BREEDING with John Combs, Sr. in 1790 Wythe Co, VA.

THREE BREEDING FAMILIES
I have attempted, after researching many records, to sort out the Breedings. I feel there is a real possibility that these four families are one, and that the Spencer “New River” Breeding, Sr., the James Breeding who married Sarah __?__, and the George Breeding, Sr., who married Rachel Cassity are either the sons or nephews of the John Breeding I, b. 1711. What I offer here is what I have been able to sort out so far. Like all genealogies, this is a work in progress.

Who was the first Breeding / Breeden / Breden?
There are so many Breedings in Virginia that it is impossible at this point in time to accurately identify any Breeden - Breden - Breeding as the progenitor of the line. Until the appearance of the Breeding / Grigsby Bible it was thought that John Breeding, Sr. was the son of Bryant Breeding (Breeden) of Shenandoah County, Virginia, born 1705. That Bryant Breeding left his estate to his son John and mentions another son, James. This John sold his interest in the estate to his brother James. John was living in Augusta County and the transaction is recorded there.

The appearance of the aforementioned Bible indicates John, b. 1711, to be the father of John Sr., b. 1730. From John, Sr., and forward, we are certain of his lineage from court documents and documentation of the Revolutionary War service of his sons Bryant, John, Richard and Spencer (Clinch River) Breeding.

1. John, b. 1711, could not have been the son of Bryant Breeding, b. 1705. They may have been brothers, or cousins.

There is also a record of a John Breden, b. 168? in England, who migrated to Virginia, who some researchers feel might be the father of the Bryant and John in question.

Then there are 3 more Breedings whose parentage is unknown.

2. Spencer “New River” Breeding, Sr., married Winifred Hurst and settled his family in Wythe County, VA.

3. James Breeding, married Sarah __?__, also settled his family in Wythe County, VA.

4. George Breeding, Sr., married Rachel Cassity and moved to Russell County, VA, then on to Adair County, KY.

Family tradition says that when John Breeding, Sr.’s son Bryant died that his widow married John “Mill Creek” Hurst and lived in Wythe County, VA and that her son, John III grew up around Spencer “New River” Breeding, Jr., the son of John III’s uncle, Spencer “New River” Breeding, Sr.

These 3 Breedings must some how be related. Maybe sons of John Breeding I, b. 1711, or sons of Bryant Breeding b. 1705. John Breeding, Sr’s son John Breeding, Jr. moved his family to Green, now Adair County, KY - where George Breeding, Sr. and family were living! His Uncle maybe?

The Breedings who lived in Wythe County, VA, i.e., New River Spencer, and James who married Sarah, their families stayed around each other, in Wythe County, VA., Puloski, County VA., and some on to Tennessee.

This is an extremely tangled mess. Each generation and each subsequent generation carried the same names forward. They all had John’s and Spencer’s and Bryant’s and James’ and George’s and Richard’s to the point that without the wives names tagged to them, it is impossible to know which male Breeding is which. Confused??? Join the crowd.

See additional information about the Breeding family in the book volume of this series on the families of the Montgomery/Floyd county areas in Virginia.

iii. SARAH BISHOP, b. Abt. 1788, Montgomery County, Virginia; m. JOHN O'MOORE, June 27, 1806, Montgomery County Virginia; b. Abt. 1785.

Notes for SARAH BISHOP:

Please NOTE: The data here on Sarah Bishop is at this time NOT proven. This is speculation, combined with a few facts. From this, the descendants have been derived. Thanks to Carol Sutherland who has been a huge help with this- this information came from her for contribution here! And also note- though we haven't completely proven this info yet, I do strongly suspect it is indeed accurate.

From the Floyd County Gen Web Site: Sarah Moore listed as being born ca 1788 Floyd County, Virginia- (still Montgomery county in 1788)-

1840 Census- pg 182- Sarah Moore- 1 female, 50-59 yrs old, 1 male 15-19 yrs old, 1 female- 5-9 yrs old. 1850 Census- household 918- Sarah Moor, 62 yo w/f, B. Floyd, Jonathon Moore HOH. Not listed again after 1850.

Jonathon Moore is listed as being born in Indiana ca 1825. Jonathon Moore first married Elizabeth Taylor- 12/6/1848 Floyd County, Va. He married second Dicy Cox- 1857 in Floyd Co Va.

1850 FCVA H918- Jonathan Moor- 25, w/m farmer, b. Indiana HOH. 1860 FCVA PHO901- Jonathan Moore, 48, w/m farmer, b. Indiana HOH, dicy 53 yo, w/f b. Va.

Martha J. Kelly- b. ca 1832 Indiana- 1850 FCVA H918 Martha J. Kelly- 18 yo w/f b. Indiana, Jonathan Moore HOH.

"Believe that sometime after Sarah and John's marriage, they moved to Indiana, based on the census listings above." Sarah Moore is not listed again after 1850. Since John Moore, Sarah's husband is not listed in 1840, he probobly died in either Indiana or Virginia, more likely than not, Indiana, before 1840. Martha's birth is listed as 1832 in Indiana- This most likely means that Sarah and her children returned to Virginia to be near her family, since her husband John either died or they divorced around 1832.

Notes for JOHN O'MOORE:

Suspect that the following is one of Sarah and John Moore's children, possibly. NOT proven! (From Carol)- In explanation: It is possible that John Moore and Sarah Bishop moved to Indiana sometime after their marriage in 1806. That would explain why this lists Jonathan Moore as being born in Indiana. He probobly moved back "home" to Floyd county Va area for a time, either with his family, or alone. That is where obviously he married Elizabeth Taylor and Dicy Cox. An important note here: Dicy Cox was the daughter of John C. Phillips, and Sarah Worrell. John C. Phillips was the son of Tobias Phillips and Margaret Jennings. Dixy Cox was ALSO married FIRST to Ambrose Norwood Cox- son of Ambrose Cox Sr. and Margaret Reed, descended from MATTHEW COX AND LUCY DICKERSON - the same line that Mary Bishop, Margaret's sister married into!

Though I can't prove it, I'd guess that ours may be the second listing here- with the two kids under 5. That Jonathan Moore is listed as being in New Garden, Wayne County Indiana in 1830.

x. MARGARET BISHOP, b. Abt. 1810, Montgomery County, Virginia; d. May 23, 1852, Grayson County, Virginia; m. ALEXANDER COX, November 15, 1851, Ashe County, North Carolina; b. September 10, 1785, Grayson County, Virginia; d. September 15, 1874, Grayson County, Virginia.

Notes for MARGARET BISHOP:

Ashe County North Carolina Census records show Margaret Bishop living with A.B. and Pheby Cox in 1850- she was 43 years old and born in Virginia. This gives her a birth date of approximately 1813. I had rough guessed her birth year at 1810. A.B. Cox was Aras Bishop Cox, Henry Bishop's grandson- son of Mary Bishop and Matthew Cox. Alexander Cox was married to Lydia Osborne before Margaret Bishop, and he was married after her to Tabitha Long- on 1-1-1859 in Ashe County, North Carolina. It appears that his marriage to Lydia Osborne was around 1810 or so, about the time that Margaret Bishop was born. Margaret Bishop Cox appears to have died May 23, 1852, in Grayson County, Virginia. She was listed in the reading of the cemetery "Osborne Fort Cemetery, Grayson County, Virginia", and it is clearly listed there that she was Alexander Cox's second wife. It does not appear that there were any children from this marriage.

Joshua Cox (M) b. c 1700, d. 1747
Pedigree Last Edited=13 Apr 2002
Joshua Cox was the son of Sir Richard Cox and Mary Bourne.
Joshua Cox was born circa 1700 at Ireland. He married Mary Rankin, daughter of John Rankin and Ann Craig, circa 1724 at Ireland; Joshua's will mentions his brother-in-law William Rankin. Joshua Cox died in 1747. Part I of Verl Weight's book was the work of Rev. Simeon Coxe, who spent 20 years researching the Cox ancestry. Simeon Cox says he went to Lancaster County, PA and looked at the will of Joshua Cox (1747) in the will book, as copied by the clerk, which said "the last will and testament of Joshua Cockx". But he says the original will was still on file and it was signed clearly John Cox. He brought the matter to the attention of the recorder who said yes he saw that it was John and he would change the index. Now in the Phillips book, there is additional evidence that this man's name was really Joshua. In 1794 David Cox signed a power of attorney in Grayson County, Virginia, for his nephew to represent him in matters concerning the land of Joshua Cox, dec'd, whom he refers to as "my father." Rev. Coxe's whole genealogy was based on the fact that family tradition says the Cox brothers were grandsons of Sir Richard Cox, and Sir Richard Cox had a son named John who was the right age. If his name was really Joshua, then he may be somebody else entirely. The birth date of 1694 is based on him being the son of Sir Richard. Now maybe Sir RIchard had another son that nobody knew about. Or maybe Joshua's name was John Joshua. Or maybe the family tradition was just wrong.......... It seems odd that these people several hundred years ago could have mis-remembered their grandfather's name, so I choose to favor the family tradition and include Sir Richard in my genealogy

Joshua Cox (c 1730 - 1821)

Osborne Fort Cemetery, Grayson County, Virginia Compiled by Ginger Ballard
This cemetery is located near New River on Route 711 (Battlefield Drive) 0.7 mi from the intersection with Route 601 (Bridle Creek Road). A large monument constructed around 1982 lists those persons known by people of the community to have been buried here. There are without doubt others buried here as well. All original stones were removed by the landowner in the late 1950s. The fenced area is an approximation of the location of the cemetery. Data was recorded in December 2001 by Ginger Ballard. NOTES David COX and his brothers John, Richard, and Joshua, and brother-in-law John CRAIG, left Lancaster County, PA, in about 1756 and spent the next several years on the Virginia frontier as soldiers in the French & Indian War. David settled in the upper New River Valley region of southwest Virginia by 1765. This area was then part of Botetourt County. It became Fincastle County in 1772, Montgomery County in 1777, Wythe County in 1790, and Grayson County in 1793. John COX, Sr., John COX, Jr., David COX, and John CRAIG appear on a list of men from Fincastle County, Virginia, who served in "Lord Dunmore's War" (1774). (Source: Library of Virginia on-line database). David Cox served with in his brother Capt. John Cox's Company during the Revolutionary War. His name appears on the Oath of Allegience signed by Capt. John Cox's company on Sept. 30, 1777, and filed with the court in Montgomery County, Virginia. ("Virginia Military Records" (Gen. Pub. County, Baltimore, 1983), p.215.) V., "David COX, brother of Captain John COX, moved his family to Grayson County and located their home in the same neighborhood where his brother, Captain John COX stopped for several years--on New River, ten or twelve miles west of Grayson Old Court House. David COX's wife was a Miss MCGOWAN. They had seven sons and three daughters, whose lives were directly connected with other good citizens in laboring for the interest of the county in all the pertained to success, prosperity and future happiness." The book "The Cox Family in America" by George William Cox (Unionist-Gazette Assoc., Somerville, NJ, 1912), pp.51-52, states that "David COX and his brother, John COX, are said to have come to this country from Scotland in 1740, another tradition says, from Wales; and still another, that they were of Scotch-Irish descent . . . . They settled on New River, in Grayson County, four miles west of Little River. John COX was Captain of the Home Guard, during the Revolutionary war. After the close of the war he removed to Ashe County, North Carolina where he lived, on the South fork of New River, until his death. His brother, David, remained with his family, in Virginia, where many of his descendants now live." According to B.F. Nuckulls, "Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County, Virginia" (Bristol, TN: King Printing County, 1914), Ch. IX: "About the year, 1740, David COX and John COX, two brothers, came from Scotland to Virginia. They both located in what is now Grayson county, on New River, about ten miles west of Grayson Old Court House. . . . David COX, brother of Captain John COX, moved his family and located on the river near where his brother first settled, near what is now Cox's Ford, ten miles west of Grayson Old C.H. David COX's wife was a Miss MCGOWAN; they had eleven sons and three daughters." Additional source of info: LDS files. Documentation needed. www.moonzstuff.com

4. GEORGE5 BISHOP (HANS JOHANNES4 BISCHOFF, HANS JAKOB3, GEORGE HINNRICH2, HANS JAKOBS1) was born January 17, 1764 in Hagerstown, Washington County.Maryland, and died May 27, 1852 in Jackson County West Virginia. He married NANCY ANNA BOOTHE June 28, 1790 in Montgomery County, Virginia. She was born October 11, 1772 in Westchester County New York, and died November 17, 1851 in Jackson County West Virginia.

Notes for GEORGE BISHOP:

From Williamson's Ancestry File:

George lived on the headwaters of the Roanoke River, Montgomery County, Virginia. Sometime between 1798 and 1801, George & family moved to Russell County, Virginia. By 1830, he was in Pike Co, KY, and by 1850, George & Anna had moved to Jackson County, (West) Virginia.

Secondary sources list his place of birth as "Hagerstown, Washington (now Frederick) County, Maryland." His year of death is given in many secondary sources as 1857. According to the 1880 census entries for his children William and Margaret, George was born in England and Virginia, respectively.

"We can trace our ancestry no further back than to the country on the head waters of the Roanoke River, Virginia. There, in a section then Montgomery County, George Bishop married Miss Ann Boothe about the year 1776. George and Ann made their first home where married, later passed further westward and lived in what later was Russell Co, Virginia, in which place the younger ones of their children were born and reared. . ." Source #23)- ABSOLUTELY Can NOT be considered valid any longer. It is well known with a good many of the West Virginia Bishop descendants from the Roane Co area, that William H. Bishop had realized his book was full of errors after it was published, and was revising a second edition of this book at the time of his death, after his death, his wife destroyed his work, as she detested the time it took him away from her, according to many of the West Va descendants. In particular, please, contact the Lockharts, in Florida, or Jane George, or her descendants, in West Va- for further information.

Children of GEORGE BISHOP and NANCY BOOTHE are:
i. STEPHEN6 BISHOP, b. May 21, 1791, Montgomery County Virginia; d. May 07, 1848, Morgan County, Kentucky; m. ELIZABETH FLETCHER, February 10, 1812, Russell County Virginia.

Notes for STEPHEN BISHOP:

I have also found a record through Rootsweb that lists a divorce for an Elizabeth and Stephen Bishop dated in 1848, Morgan County Kentucky. Though I have no proof of this, I believe it may have been this Stephen Bishop and Elizabeth- which then leads me to wonder about Stephen's death the same year. We know he died that year in Morgan County, Kentucky, but I wonder now what the cause of his death was exactly. And it seems odd to me that Stephen and Elizabeth were listed as being divorced, yet there was no mention of this anywhere in any of the family records, and Stephen died the same year.

ii. LYDIA BISHOP, b. 1792, Montgomery County Virginia; d. February 1880, Roane County, West Virginia; m. ELIJAH TAYLOR, November 21, 1808, Russell County Virginia; b. June 27, 1789, Alexandria, Fairfax County Virginia; d. December 11, 1866, Roane County West Virginia.
iii. DAVID BISHOP, b. December 1794, Montgomery County, Virginia; d. May 06, 1878, Roane County, West Virginia.

Notes for DAVID BISHOP:
One source says b. May 5 1789 KY, d. May 6 1874. Also some claim his name is David Davis Bishop.
Referring to the scan of the page from the mortality records of Roane Co WVA, it shows the year being 1878 that he died. Isaac Drake was the informant.

iv. JOHN (WILLIAM) BISHOP, b. December 1794, Montgomery County Virginia; d. Abt. 1866, Meigs County, Ohio; m. (1) CATHERINE ELIZABETH MUTTER, Abt. 1814, Russell County, Virginia; b. Abt. 1796, Montgomery County , Virginia; d. Abt. 1840, Roane County West Virginia; m. (2) SUSANNA UTT, May 19, 1845, Jackson, CO, West Virginia; b. Abt. 1800, Ripley, , West Virginia; d. Ripley, , West Virginia.

Notes for JOHN (WILLIAM) BISHOP:
Quoting Steve Williamson:

Twin of David. Secondary sources list his middle initial as "E.," and sometimes as "J."

John lived 1822 to 1842 on the Big Sandy about where Pikeville is now. In 1839, he & his father George sold land to John Hunt, Sr (John Hunt's son Moses married John Bishop's daughter Mary). John left Kentucky with Armstead Harper and his wife, Rachel Bishop Harper, to settle Harper's District - Upper Harper, on the Pocatalico River, Roane County, West Virginia. There in 1843 Elizabeth fell sick and died. John later moved to Minersville, Ohio.

"John and Elizabeth Bishop, his wife, lived most of their married career on Big Sandy about where Pikeville is now; to them were born there the following sons and daughters: Aaron, Ann, George, John, Moses, Rachel and Cydnie, born respectively, within the years 1822 to 1842. In the year 1843, John and Elizabeth, with their family migrated to this Pocatalico River; she fell sick here and died in a short time after arrival. The older girls kept the pioneer cabin home a few years, marry-ing and leaving one at a time. The pioneer home was sold and John with his younger two boys and two daughters next have their home at Minersville, Ohio; in the meantime John has united in marriage with Miss Susan Utt; of this marriage, were born one daughter and two sons..." I wouldn't even consider #10 as a source any longer at all, firstly. Secondly, John's name is listed both ways - as a middle initial J. and in some places wtih the E.- I strongly lean toward it being E. Please see the work of Walter Drier on this one.
Yes, John and David were twins apparently, and David was listed in the 1850 census as still living with George and Nancy and was "insane".

Supposedly John and his second wife both died in Meigs County,Ohio, between the years of 1866-1868 in a plague.

I have long suspected that it's possible that in reality, this may also be where George and Nancy are buried- Meigs County Ohio, not Jackson County West Virginia. My husband is correct in reminding me that unless someone out there has always known where those two are buried and taken the time to update and care for the gravestones, the chances of ever finding and correctly identifying George Bishop and Nancy Anna Boothe Bishop's graves grow slimmer with every day that passes.
Meigs County Ohio, is directly across the Ohio River from Jackson County West Virginia. Now granted at 85 years old, it may not have been an easy thing to do to get across that river, but- if his son was there helping, then it could have happened.
It just seems awfully strange that while so many of the daughters of George and Nancy settled in that area and the descendants stayed there, why NO ONE can offer up even a photograph or an exact location of the graves of George and Nancy Bishop. William stayed in Pike Co Ky, John, of course, was in Meigs Co Ohio, many of the daughters were in West Va- some in Pikeville area, and two sons still living with mom and dad in 1850.
It's quite sad.

The Story behind the story- William Bishop and July Ann Carter. It has been told to me that July (Julie?) Ann Carter was living in the home of Moses Hunt and wife Mary Polly Bishop.
The 1850 Pike County Census proves this:
8 114 114 Hunt Moses 37 M Farmer 250 KY X
9 114 114 Hunt Mary 30 F VA X
REMARKS: Middle initial illegible
10 114 114 Hunt Aron 12 M KY
11 114 114 Carter July A 29 F KY X
12 114 114 Carter Mary E 4 F KY
13 114 114 Goode John 9 M KY
(Another question here- who is the "John Goode" also living in this household?)- Two of my main sources on this have been Steve Williamson, and Bill Anderson. One of them told me that William was a frequent visitor to Moses and Mary's home- hence- Mary E. Carter was born.

From Steve Williamson's Files on Ancestry:
William & Polly's graves were moved from Bishop Family Cemetery to the Annie E. Young Cemetery at Chloe Creek near Pikeville in 1964 as part of relocation due to the construction of the Fishtrap Dam. Records for this cemetery list: Grave #19-21 Bill Bishop Sr. 1811-1896, and #19-22 Polly Bishop, 1811-1895, list as next of kin, Grandchildren: Gove Bishop, Pearly Blackburn, and Wicke Bishop.

4) The 1870 Census, Pike Co, KY, Dist 4, pg 53: #106/106 Bishop, William Sr., 59, Farmer 1500/380, b. Virginia, w/wife Polly, 59, b. KY; also daughter Rhoda A. Smiley & 3 of her children
5) The 1880 Census, Pike Co, KY, E.D. 94: #149/153 Wm Bishop, 69, b. VA (father b. ENG (England), mother b. NY), w/wife Polly, 68, b. KY (both parents - VA); also grandson Jefferson Slone, 16, Laborer. The mother's birthplace supports placing William as the son of George & Nancy Bishop (Nancy Booth was definitely born in New York). The 1850 census entry for George gives his birthplace as Maryland.

My notes about Steve's note-
I suspect that by 1880- Willliam was a bit senile, or, perhaps the census taker assumed that ALL Bishop's came from England and put that in him or herself. I find it difficult to believe that William truly thought he was from England. I haven't looked yet, but surely in earlier censuses he stated the correct birthplace of his father.

5. LYDIA5 BISHOP (HANS JOHANNES4 BISCHOFF, HANS JAKOB3, GEORGE HINNRICH2, HANS JAKOBS1) was born Abt. 1767 in Montgomery County, Virginia, and died in Possibly In North Carolina. She married HENRY LONG. He was born Abt. 1740, and died Aft. April 1803.

Notes for HENRY LONG:

Henry Long appears on the 2-10-1790 Montgomery County, Virginia tax list C- of the "Back and Walker's Creek area." He was taxed with one male- age 16-21, no slaves, and 6 horses. Living near Henry are Christian Long, and Abner and Samuel Lester. Henry does not appear on the 1789 Montgomery Co Va tax list, but does appear on Tax List C of Wythe County, Virginia, 1793. James and John Long were taxed in 1790, lower Montgomery County, in the portion that was previously recorded as being the upper district of Botetourt County, Va. John Long was taxed in Montgomery Co in 1792, and 1793. William Long was on the Peach Bottom Creek about 400 yards below Nathan Barnetts' improvements, and was surveyed 1-27-1790 for William Long, 48 acres on Peach Bottom Creek, south side. Vol. 11; p. 149, 72, pg. 36, 49, 100, 104, 107.

6. JACOB5 BISHOP (HANS JOHANNES4 BISCHOFF, HANS JAKOB3, GEORGE HINNRICH2, HANS JAKOBS1) was born May 29, 1770 in Montgomery County, Virginia, and died December 18, 1864 in Floyd County, Virginia. He married KATHERINE ELKINS October 02, 1792 in Montgomery County, Virginia, daughter of RALPH ELKINS and MARY ?. She was born 1774 in Unknown- Probobly Montgomery County, Virginia - See Notes., and died September 27, 1849 in Floyd County, Virginia.

Notes for JACOB BISHOP:
Special NOTE- Please do not take every word of the following for fact- there are some discrepencies here. This account is from George Washington Bryson's book entitled "John the Settler"- While his book title claims that the book is about John Bishop (Hans Johannes bischoff) it is in reality about the descendants of John's grandson Abraham (Abel) Bishop. Bryson actually did not complete his research on John himself, did very little in fact, and this has become a 'gray area' in some cases for other researchers. We have been trying to refute inconsistencies from not only Mr. Bryson over the years, but many other researchers as well, as we physically have gone to 'horses mouth' over and over again, researching the actual physical records in the courthouses, the graveyards, and memories from direct descendants.

Jacob Bishop was born to his father John Bishop and unknown mother around 1770 Botetourt County area that is now Montgomery Co, Va . Some think his mother may have been named Mary who drowned in the Little river when the stream was too flush, crossing at this time was very dangerous as there were no bridges. As a rule this would have been in the springtime after a heavy rain upstream. Jacob was a young boy at the time. His father married for the second time to a woman named Ruth with maiden name thought to be Elkins and a sister of Archibald Elkins. Archibald married the oldest daughter of John Bishop named Margaret. This was a second marriage for Ruth also. Jacob learned farming from his father. Later in life this proved to be beneficial to his family. Like his brother Henry, he was a large athletic man, noted for industry and prudence in managing the business affairs of life. this was attested to by the grandson of Henry, Dr. A. B. Cox, the author of FOOTPRINTS ON THE SANDS OF TIME.

Jacob Bishop married Katherine Elkins in Oct 2, 1792 (marriage record) Henry Bishop was surety. She was born in 1774. He became a landowner on Oct 3, 1800 when he purchased 50 acres of land from his brother Henry and his wife Fannie. This land had previously been acquired by Henry in grants of 160 acres. It was located on Little river. His father also obtained a part of the noted land along with John Lester, Jr. In the same time period. John Bishop sold 140 acres to Henry.

On Dec 6, 1791, Jacob paid his first personal property and poll tax. At that time, he owned one horse. It was in 1815, that his sons began to show up on tax records when he was shown with two males over 16 year s of age. As his sons came of age, he gave then parcels of land as gifts based on love and affection. At the time that Abel came of age, Jacob only had the land that he was farming. He did give Abel's son, George Obediah, a parcel when he married for love and affection.

Notes for KATHERINE ELKINS:

From Vannessa Allen's notes: Katherine Elkins born Abt. 1771, Montgomery Co, Virginia, married 2 Oct 1792, in Montgomery Co, VA by Richard Whitt, Jacob Bishop, born Montgomery Co, Virginia, (son of John Sr. Bishop and Margaretha Overmeyer). Katherine died 27 Sep 1849, Montgomery Co, Virginia. Married the brother of her sister-in-law Margaret Bishop (Archibald Elkins' wife). Married by Richard Whitt, with Jacob's brother Henry Bishop surety. Lived on Little River near Jacob's father John Bishop and brother Henry and near where Katherine's brother Archibald had lived before he died. This is off New River, south of present-day Radford, Virginia. Jacob Bishop purchased 50 acres from his brother Henry in October 1800. Named her daughter Elizabeth and also had sons Abel/Abraham and Stephen. I've seen records showing that Jacob was born 29 May 1770 and died 16 Dec 1864. If that is true, then he may have been the son of John Bishop and Ruth Elkins (Ruth, not Margaretha, was his mother?). My note on this: Ruth, as far as we have been able to determine, didn't die until between 1771 and 1772. She was still alive in May of 1770 when Jacob was born, as far as we know. (See dates and notes on Rachel Skaggs Lester Bishop files).

As far as the parents of Catherine Elkins, I have not had much luck but have come up with a few assumptions sends: Ralph Elkins (1), pioneer, emigrated with the cavaliers to the Old Dominion and received, Jan. 15, 1661, a patent of land in York Count y, Va., from Governor Moryson. (See Virginia land grants, Book 4, p. 437 .) The date of his death is unknown. Through his two sons, Ralph, Jr., and Richard, he is the founder of the Elkins family in Virginia.

My note: Possibly Ralph Jr. because Catherine Elkins Bishop's daughter in law (Mary Jane Hornberger Bishop) was a Hornbarger and Hornbargers and Ralph Elkins both owned land on crab creek. Also a land transaction for 1774 on little river names John Bishop, and Ralph Elkins.

Children of JACOB BISHOP and KATHERINE ELKINS are:
i. NANCY6 BISHOP, b. 1793, Montgomery Co, VA; d. Abt. 1871; m. (1) JOHN M. EPPERLY, January 01, 1822, Montgomery County, VA.; b. January 11, 1791, Montgomery County, Virginia; d. August 25, 1850; m. (2) JOHN WALTERS, April 10, 1823, Montgomery County, VA; b. Abt. 1796, Virginia.

Notes for NANCY BISHOP:

I am not sure that her marriage to John Epperly was correct- that may not have been this Nancy, or may not have been a "Nancy" at all. But, I haven't found anything listing her definitely as "Mary", as some researchers have said her name was.

If indeed this Nancy Bishop married this John Epperly, then these children are not right. If the marriage data is accurate, then this Nancy Bishop was only married to John Epperly for one year and three months. Questions:- What happened to the marriage, if this is accurate? Did that John Epperly die? If so, then who is the John Epperly in the 1850 Montgomery County Va Census, and/or the 1850 Wayne County Indiana census? What other John Epperly's (sons of whom) were in these areas at those times? Was there a Mary Bishop?? And a Nancy Bishop? Both children of the same parents? RESEARCH NEEDED!!!!!

Notes for JOHN M. EPPERLY:

Note from the author (Nancy Bishop): At this time, it is unproven, and completely unclear exactly whether or not this John is the John Epperly that Nancy Bishop married. As one can see, the dates of the children's births, from one wife to the other are literally impossible. However, there are other factors that do add up, so I am including both wives and descendants from each in this genealogy. It will have to be up to the readers discretion about what to "take to the bank" on this one. Further research definitely needs to be done on the Epperly lines, and on the Phares surname.

DUBLIN, TEXAS. Dublin is on U.S. highways 67 and 377 in southwest Erath County. It was founded in 1854 by A. H. Dobkins and named in 1860, probably for the warning cry at Indian raids, "Double In," for the capital of Ireland, or for the double-log cabins used by early settlers. Growth increased in 1874 as Dublin acquired stagecoach service and a post office. In 1881 the Texas Central Railroad was built through to Mount Airy, a few miles from Dublin. J. D. Bishop laid out a townsite on the line four miles south of Mount Airy, which drew residents from old to new Dublin. Within a year the new Dublin had forty-five businesses and sixty-five homes, so the railroad moved its depot from Mount Airy to new Dublin. The town was incorporated on March 18, 1889. By 1890 the population was 2,025. It was 2,370 in 1900, 2,271 in 1930, 2,746 in 1950, 2,810 in 1970, 2,723 in 1980, and 3,190 in 1990. The town is a center for agriculture and industry, including oil and gas production, clothing factories, peanut shelling and drying plants, feed mills, milk processing, saddle and rope making, and metal stamping. Dublin has two city parks, the Lyon Museum, a public library, a hospital, and a nursing home. It also has an airport, two railroads, a golf course, and recreational facilities at Proctor Reservoir.qv The town was one of the first in the state to have streetcars. It is the birthplace of golfer Ben Hogan, home of a world-championship rodeo, and the former home of the annual Grand Army of the Republic reunion.

From Walter Dreier: Notes for John Bishop: 1'st wife was Marie Wilson, whom he married in1817 in Montgomery County, Virginia. 2'nd wife was Sarah McCloud b. ca. 1825. whom he married about 1840 in Tennesee. No record of what happened to Marie Wilson Bishop. No record of death or bural of Sarah McCloud Bishop. 3'd wife was Viny Stoner, whom he married Jan 15, 1857 in Warren County, Tenn. The Tn marriage records say "Viny" but her real name was Lavina. She was the daughter of William Stoner and Elizabeth Johnson. Court records in Warren County, Tennessee indicate that John E. Bishop purchased 5 pounds of tobacco for 25 cents per pound at the estate sale of Ericuis Smith on Dec 19, 1857. Since John E. Bishop is ennumerated in the 1860 Warren Co Tenn. Census with his third wife, Lavina, but is not found anywhere in the 1870 Tenn. Census, it is assumed he died between 1860 and 1870. Luvinia, b. 1830, probobly remarried. John E. Bishop is enumerated in the 1830 census in Virginia. However, there are documents on file in Warre County that some workers think he might have been there earlier. Plat Book No. 1, page 169, No 61 on May 1, 1824. James C. Hays and Wm. Carroll entered 140 acres on Barren Fork of Collins River, northwardly from the house in which Brooksher formerly lived and where Joseph Bishop now lives on the road leading from McMinnville to Shelbyville and about eight miles from the first named place, west boundary line of a survey in the name of Absolam Brown of 100 acres Chain Carriers, Joseph and John Bishop. Warren County Plat book 1 page 159 #579 on July 13, 1824, John Rogers and William Stroud entered 100 acres on Barren Fork of Collins River, east boundary line of and occupant entry in the name of William Carroll and James C. Hayes, entry # 61, chain carrier, Joseph Bishop and John Bishop. In the 1850 census of Warren County, there is a Joseph Bishop, age 70, that is likely to have been the Joseph Bishop as the chain carrier mentioned above. He would have been 46 at the time of the above survey. However, these two Bishop men are the sons of an early resident of Warren County- Stephen Bishop, who died about 1830. His will identifies these two sons. John Bishop, age 67, and third wife, Viny Stoner, age 30, are enumerated in the 1860 census of Warren County with children Mary, age 11 and George, age 2 Since they didn't marry until 1857, Mary is the child of John E.'s second wife, Sarah McCloud, and George, born 1858, is the child of Viny Stoner.

iii. WILLIAM BISHOP, b. 1797, Montgomery Co, VA.

Notes for WILLIAM BISHOP:

William is shown as having been given by his father Jacob 50 acres of land on 4-3-1821 based on love and affection; recorded in deed book G,page 583. This transaction put him on the list of the largest land owners of Floyd County in the land tax book for the year 1831. He is believed to have been unmarried, and died between 1870 and 1880.

Not 100% positive that this below refers to this William, but I think I am right in feeling pretty positive it is.

Notes for JOSEPH BISHOP:

Joseph was shown in the personal property and land tax records for Montgomery County, Virginia - in 1847, he was shown with two parcels of land- one of 60 acres and the other of 184 acres . Location of this land was approximately 12 miles south of the court house in Montgomery Co , Va. The information pertaining to the deaths of six members of the Joseph Bishop family in 1854 is recorded in the Circuit Court Clerk's office in Christiansburg, Virginia in the book of Deaths and Births Montgomery County, 1853-1868- page 5, lines 15-20. They died from typhoid fever .

The children that died in 1854 were Nancy, Elizabeth, Catherine, Joel, and Jacob.
We still need information on James M. Bishop, as well as Mahala.

Notes for ABRAHAM "ABEL" BISHOP:

Abraham (Abel) Bishop was born to his parents, Jacob and Catherine Elkins Bishop, on May 30 , 1801 in Montgomery County, Va on Little River. One of the earliest descriptions of his fathers land was shown as on Little River adjoining Samuel Thompson. Also shown adjoining a Spring Branch adjoining his grandfather John Bishop. From the personal property tax of 1822, we find Jacob Bishop, the father of Abel, with one male between the ages of 16-21. In 1823, Jacob is listed alone and then in 1824, Abel is shown grouped with his father and brothers. It is possible that Abel and Mary ran away from home to get married since Mary was underage. There is a marriage bond in Surry County, North Carolina for Polly Jane possible incorrectly recorded as Polly James. This was August 11, 1821. Mary Jane (Polly) Hornbarger was born on Jan 2, 1807 Montgomery co, Va. Death certificates for two of their children give their parents names. In Nov 1845, Abel bought 55 acres of land from Mary West, one of the daughters of the Rev. War soldier, John Lester. this property joined the old patent land of John Lester Jr and was at or near the mouth of Brush creek. Abel's name was listed among the estate sale list of the first John Lester held in 1825. His occupation was farmer. From a chancery suit involving land, it showed Abel deceased by the April term 1871. From papers in this suit, we know that he was deceased before Jan 7, 1870 and after the 1860 census for Montgomery co, Va.

His land was on the north side of Little River at the mouth of Brush Creek. It was sold on Jun 13, 1871 in front of the Floyd County Co urt House afteradvertising time and place of sale. Daniel R. Simmons became the purchaser.

From "John Bishop, The Settler", by George Washington Bryson Jr.: "We think we have found the marriage bond of Abel and his wife Polly in Surry County,North Carolina. We believe they ran away from home to get married. Mary was under age . When they gave the information to the Clerk in N.C. she told him her name was Polly Jane and we believe he took her to say her name was Polly James. They were married on the 11'th day of August 1821. The Bondsman was Archibald McPeak. From the marriage bonds of his children that we learned that Abel's name was Abraham and he was also called Abram by some. In November of 1845 Abel Bishop bought fifty five acres of land from Mary West. She was one of the daughters of the first John Lester who had settled in Montgomery County, and her brother John Lester Jr. acted as her attorney. This property joined the old patent land of John LesterJr., which was acquired on the 19'th day of October, 1796. It was at or near the mouth of Brush Creek. We also found Abel's name among the estate sale list of this first John Lester held in 1825. Abel Bishop's occupation was that of a farmer. From a chancery suit involving land, it showed that Abel Bishop deceased April Term 1871. From papers in this suit we know that he was dead before1-7--1870, and after the 1860 U.S. Census when he was shown living in Montgomery County with Christiansburg as his post office. The location was on the North Side of Little River at the mouth of Brush Creek. It was also shown adjoining the lands of Thomas R. Simmons, Isaac Boothe, deceased, Jacob Graham, and Thomas W. Spindle. The land was sold on the13'th day of June 1871, in front of the Floyd County Courthouse after advertising time and place of sale according to the decree.Thereof Daniel R . Simmons became the purchaser. In the 1870 U.S. Census dated 7-13-1870, only Mary Bishop was shown in Montgomery County with Christiansburg as the post office. She was keeping house and Jacob, her youngest child , was at home. Also shown were two ofher grandchildren. In the 1880 US Census Mar y is shown living in her son Jacob's home- She was shown as being 72 years old at this time. We have not found ou t the time or place of her death, but we know that Jacob bought land from his father -in -law Asa Sumpter and farmed in Floyd County. He was shown in the 1900 US Census for Giles County, and Mary wasn't shown.

Notes for MARY JANE POLLY HORNBARGER:

I don't have parents for Mary Jane but have some preliminar y Hornbarger info Annals of SW Virginia 1787 John Smelzer to Jacob Hornbarger 292 acres on crab cre ek 1793 Jacob Hornbarger Sr and Elizabeth to Jacob Jr 177 acr es on crab creek for 20 pounds 1796 Jacob Hornbarger Sr. and Elizabeth to Peter for natura l love and affection 115 acres on crab creek

From: DDamico826 Jacob Hornbarger, Sr. emigrated to Philadelphia in 1737; appears in Augusta County, Va records in 1766 when he purchased land on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River & in 1767 he sold land on a branch of the South Fork. On 6/20/17 69, he became a naturalized citizen in Augusta County. He appears on Montgomery County militia lists around 1779, along with Philip. He bought 29 2 acres on Crab Creek in Montgomery Co in 1787. In 1793, he & his wife sol d their son Jacob, Jr. 177 acres of this tract & in 1796, they sold Peter 11 5 acres plus an additional 120 acres. In making the deed to Peter, the parents exchanged the land for "necessary & sufficient food, drink & wearing apparel".They reserved the dwelling house and the liberty of keeping 4 cows& calves & 2 horses for their use. In 1804, they filed suit in Augusta Co because Peter was not keeping his end of the bargain.

vi. CHRISTINA BISHOP, b. June 12, 1807, Montgomery Co, Virginia; m. JOHN J. FARMER, March 23, 1833, Montgomery Co, VA; b. June 13, 1813, Montgomery County, Virginia; d. March 22, 1878, Camden County, Missouri.

Notes for CHRISTINA BISHOP:
The source for the descendants of Christina Bishop and John Farmer was Kathy Farmer, and David Farmer- (LKE3@aol.com) and (dfarmer1@socal.rr.com) From a series of emails beginning dated 1-16-2004.
We have Christina's birth and marriage but have been unable to find a death record or burial record for her.
It has been implied that after Christina's death, John remarried, but have been unable to locate a second wife, or any other information about this.
Children of John and Christina were given to me by David Farmer, and the list was taken from the family bible of Elzie Matthew Farmer.
We can only guess at when John and Christena left Va., and arrived in Mo. by the births of their children. I have no 1840 census for John and Christena.
John and Christena's 1850 Cole Co Mo. census look like this:
Pg 49, #719, Taken from microfilm at the Mo. Arvhives in Jefferson City, Mo., and have a copy of the original sheet.
John Farmer, age 37, Va. Value of Real Estate 500 trade listed as Farmer
Christena age 42, Va.
Stephen - 15, Mo
Catharine- 13, Mo
Josua -11, Mo
Joseph -5, Mo
William - 3, Mo
The birth of all these children in 1850 are claimed in Mo. Later census will claim their birth in Va. This might be the confusion with the Goodspeed article. If the article was written according to the ages of John and Christena's children in 1850 it would imply that John came to Mo. with his father Joseph who according to land records was already in Mo by 1833. Probably someone neglected to look at John and Christena in 1860 or research the family very well.
Just as a note: There are also other familiar Farmer's, Bell's and others living close to John and Christena in 1850.
I didn't think much about the mistake on the children's birth in 1850 but have been concerned aobut the missing children not being shown. Just rounding off the ages, Nancy M would be 13, Elizabeth about 10 and Virginia about 8. I had wondered if these girls hadn't died as they are also not shown in John's 1860 census, though by now they would be old enough to marry. Finding Nancy M. has given me hope that they are still alive in 1850 and hopefully staying at someone else's house, I am going to check all of Cole Co, for a sign of them and hopefully that may lead us to other siblings of John Farmer. I know who's houses they are not staying at as a start.
By 1860 John and Christena have moved down to Camden County Mo, and census looks like this:
John Farmer- age 47, Va
Christena - age 51, Va
Joseph- age 14, Mo
William age 10, Mo
Jemima - age 35, Va
Stephen- age 24, Va
Catherine- age 20, Mo
Census does note that Stephen and this Catherine were married within the year.
I do not know what has happened to John and Christena's daughter, Catharine. There is a Catharine Farmer buried in Old Erie Cemetery, b. 1840, I have seen John Milburn Farmer's 1850 census and know he has a daughter Catharine b 1840, so this would not be John and Christena's Catharine who was born in 1836. Possibly though John Milburn Farmer's daughter Catharine is Stephen's wife.
In 1870, John and Christena are shown in McDonald Co, Mo:
John Farmer, age 57, Va
Christina, age 61, Va
Joseph, age 25, Mo
This is last census shown for John or Christena, but later records show at least Joseph traveled down to Benton Co Ark and Nancy M is also in Ark by 1870 so it is unsure if John and Christena also traveled down to Ark and possibly Christina died there.

Notes for JOHN J. FARMER:

CEMETERY RECORDS

FARMER CEMETERY* Rural cemetery located off Highway #5 by the side of Lake Road #36 in section #28, Range #17W, Township #39N. Located near Indian Point Resort. Note: These inscriptions were copied on November 25, 1960 by Ilene Sims Yarnell of Versailles Missouri. ( David Farmer has added bracketed notes in February 2001 & revised September, 2002) *

Also: David Farmer has been so kind as to inform me that there is some degree of confusion reguarding the official name of this cemetery. He is unsure that it ever actually even had an "official name". He states that some people have called it "The Farmer Cemetery"; other have called it the "Standing Rock Cemetery" (Called that for the district it was in at the time prior to the biulding of the "Lake of the Ozarks" recreational area.). While there are many Farmer's buried in the graveyard, there are also a lot of other graves there of folks who are both related and unrelated to the Farmer family. I just want to include this bit of information for anyone out there who may be researching surnames buried in this cemetery so that there is no additional confusion over the name.

Ilene Sims Yarnell notes that: " Some of these stones have been broken, patched with concrete, but many have been set up straight. Someone has remembered this cemetery in recent years."

With a few exceptions, i.e., spelling of Joshua Farmer's 1st. wife and some missing or unreadable dates, the tombstone birth and death dates agree with the information in M.E. Farmer's Bible records and from other genealogy sources. It's safe to assume that we are the descendants of the people buried in this cemetery. D.B.F. 2, 2001 / 9,2002

STEPHEN H. BISHOP Stephen H. Bishop was born to his parents Jacob and Catherine Elkins Bishop in 1820 in Montgomery County Virginia. He married first Melvina Altizer on the 24th day of December 1850 in Floyd County Virginia. They had thefollowing children; (100)Rebecca Emaline born in 1851 . She married Elias Alley on the 8th day of April 1875 in Floyd County Virginia. He was the son of Anderson and Rachel Alley; (101)Minerva F born on the 11th day of March 1853 in Montgomery County Virginia. She married Richard Reed on the 8th day of July 1875. He was the son of Robert and Margaret Reed. Melvina died on the 8th of December 1854 in childbirth in Montgomery County Virginia. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Elkins Altizer. Stephen married second Lucinda Dulaney on the 20th day of November 1856 in Floyd County Virginia. She was born to Richard and Miram Reed Dulaney in August 1830. Stephen's occupation was that of farmer. They had the following children: ( 102)Jacob R. born in 1857 and married on the13th day of June 1878 Nancy L . Bower, the daughter of Lewis and Nancy Bower; (103)Walter S . born on the 15th day of February 1860 and married on the 10th day of December 1885 Delilah Dulaney the daughter of Wyatt and Martha Dulaney; ( 104)Stephen Jefferson born in 1862 and married first Emmazella Duncan on the 22nd day of July 1883. (105)Miram Clara born in 1870 and married on the 3rd day May1891 James M. Epperley; (106)Dillard born in 1874. It was reported also that they had two other children, one dying as an infant and the other as a small child. Stephen received eighty acres of land from his father in June 1857 for one dollar. This is recorded in Montgomery County Deed Book Q, Page 228. Stephen died between the years 1900 and 1910. Lucinda died after 1910. In our continuing search for information concerning our family we have learned some details concerning the two children from the1870 Mortality records for Montgomety County, Auburn Township. ( 81 )Melvin R. Bisho page 4, male, white born in Va. died July 1870 from the Flux; (82)Tazewell Bishop age 2, male , white born in Va. died August 18701fromthe Flux.
The above was quoted from Bryson's book on Jacob's descendants.

I have also seen his name listed as Stephen H.- as above- but I believe this is from transcription errors throughout the years. I believe his name should have been Stephen M. Bishop.

7. DARKY5 GOTHRIN (HANS JOHANNES4 BISCHOFF, HANS JAKOB3, GEORGE HINNRICH2, HANS JAKOBS1) was born in Montgomery County, Virginia. She married OWEN O'DONNELL February 20, 1796 in Montgomery County, Virginia. He was born Bet. 1771 - 1880 in Tazewell County, VA, and died Bet. 1830 - 1840.

Notes for DARKY GOTHRIN:

The marriage record of Darky Gothrin to Owen O'Donald on 2-20-1796, Montgomery County Virginia, shows consent of parents John and Ruth Bishop. Jacob Bishop made oath that Darky Gotherin, daughter of Ruth Bishop, the wife of John Bishop, was of full and lawful age. (Vol. 11- pgs 179-197>) It is not known wherther Ruth was Darky's mother, or if Darky had been married before Owen, or??

Notes for OWEN O'DONNELL:

Owen Odonald's name appears on the 12-10-1977 Montgomery County, Virginia legislative petition to form a new county- as does Jacob, George, and David Bishop's names.

Children of DARKY GOTHRIN and OWEN O'DONNELL are:
i. RUTH6 O'DONNELL, m. MARTIN PEERY, October 02, 1819, Tazewell County, VA; b. 1788.
ii. ISAAC O'DONNELL, m. REBECCA SWADER, January 25, 1825, Tazewell County, VA.

8. DAVID5 BISHOP (HANS JOHANNES4 BISCHOFF, HANS JAKOB3, GEORGE HINNRICH2, HANS JAKOBS1) was born November 17, 1772 in Montgomery County Virginia, and died June 1861 in Lawrence County Kentucky. He married ELIZABETH WOLFORD February 20, 1801 in Tazewell County Virginia. She was born 1783 in Montgomery County Virginia, and died 1865 in Lawrence County Kentucky.

Notes for DAVID BISHOP:

He was 6'6" tall. He and his family moved from Tazewell Co unty, Virginia to Lawrence County, Kentucky in 1839.

David and Elizabeth are buried in the Bishop/Lester Cemetar y, Blaine, Lawrence County, Kentucky. The cemetary is on p rivate property now owned by Lawrence, Rhoda and David Cord le. They have reclaimed the cemetary from the woods and ke ep it maintained.David was supposedly nicknamed "Long Dave" or "Tall Dave". He was 6'6" tall. He moved with his son-in-law Harvey Lester from Tazewell County, Virginia to Lawrence County. David and Elizabeth are buried in the Bishop/Lester Cemetery, Blaine, Lawrence County, Ky. I have also seen the listing for this cemetery as: Bishop-Lester Cemetery, Racoon Creek, Hoods Fork. Though I've personally seen the cemetery from the bottom of the hill, I've not seen the stones yet. The day we were trying to go to it, it had just started to snow, and we were in a car that wouldn't do well on snow or ice, so we had to hurry and leave. I plan to return to photograph the stones and the cemetery itself as soon as possible.
is on private property now owned by Lawrence, Rhoda, and David Cordle This cemetary is on a hill behind the home of Milton J. Cordle, Jr. and wife Dixie (Wells) Cordle (1976). This is part of the original David Bishop farm, which he purchased in 1844. They have reclaimed the cemetery from the woods and keep it maintained.

Other researchers have Larkin's wife Mary Polly Clevenger listed as Mary Polly Toler. Marriage records of Tazewell County state that William McGuire married Larkin Bishop and Polly Clevenger on December 1, 1826. This means that her maiden name might have been Toler, and she was married to a Clevenger.
Doug Bishop noted the following:
Zachariah Toler married Lucy Blankenship in Tazewell County Virginia on Nov 7 1809- married by John Perry. There is no other documentation that Mary Toler and Mary Clevinger is the same woman. The Mary Bishop listed with Larkin Bishop in the 1860 Wyoming Co W VA Census as age 62 must have died between Aug 1860 and Sept 1863. The ministers that performed marriage ceremonies in Tazewell Co Va were notorious with their misspelling of names. There are also errors in the annotation footnotes of the 1870 Wyoming County W VA compiled book. Probably because they were family traditions handed down.

Description: L-R:
Mary "Polly" (Asberry) Bishop McGuire (known as Grandma McGuire); her son, John A McGuire (White) holding his daughter Cora, his wife Alva (Kilby) McGuire.

Mary "Polly" Asberry born 1808/1815 Tazewell Co Va died 26 Jan 1877 Blaine, Lawrence Co Ky d/o James Asberry & Katherine Catrina Francisco married :
(1) 1 Jan 1830 Tazewell Co Va John Bishop born Oct 1803/1806 Tazewell Co Va died ca 1841/1844 s/o David Bishop & Elizabeth Wolford.
(2) 7 Feb 1844 Tazewell Co Va John Nealy McGuire born 1814 s/o Joseph McGuire & Elizabeth Brown.

As you probably know, our Mary Polly Asberry must have been a bit promiscuious, but who are we to judge how a woman, alone, had to live in those times!!

Although I can find no marriage records, it is said that a Mr. Thistle was the father of a number of children with Mary Polly (one child died young) and then a John White was the father of two children (maybe more?), one being John A McGuire who is pictured here. He was born 9 August 1851 Tazewell Co Va died 4 March 1893/1895 Johnson Co Ky. He and all his family went by the name of McGuire except for his youngest son, SELCUS, who went by the name WHITE. John A McGuire (White) married Alva Kilby.

Harvey and Catherine Lester to Allen Sanders for 50 acres on Wolf Pen Branch a tributary of Lower Laural fork of Big Blaine for the sum of $340.00 on May 27, 1880. The deed was recorded in deed book "U" page 46, recorded September 14, 1886 by G.F. Johnson. ( For some reason Dad thinks Allen Sanders was a nephew or cousin to Harvey Lester. He did not state that as a fact, but thinks he had heard that from his Dad.) jim wheeler

Notes for GATHA BISHOP:

Information taken from family Bible of Elizabeth Swan Bishop and U.S. Government military service records.

Grandfather Bishop held the rank of Private and served as a musician with Company B, 14th Kentucky Infantry, Union Army during the Civil War. Wyoming County history books incorrectly list him as belonging to the Confederate 14th Kentucky Volunteers.

He enlisted December 10, 1861 at Camp Wallace in Louisa, Kentucky joining "Captain Wood's 14th Kentucky (Foot) Volunteers".

According to his service record he spent much of the war hospitalized in Ashland General hospital. He was fortunate to survive his illness. Over 400,000 Civil War soldiers died as a result of disease.

He mustered out of the Army on January 31, 1865. He and Elizabeth moved to Wyoming County soon afterward. He first appears in W.Va. in the 1870 Census.

He is buried in the Bud Cemetery, Bud, W.Va. His marker reads "Gatha Bishop, Co.B, 14th Ky Inf."

Elizabeth may be buried in the same cemetery under an unmarked grave. It is also possible she was buried with other members of the Swan Family in Kentucky.
